At WA Cares, the work is more than implementing a new program, it’s about shaping a system that will help Washingtonians age with dignity and independence.

For Ali and Nicole, being part of this first-in-the-nation effort has been both inspiring and energizing.

A big part of their role is partnering with 13 of Washington’s Area Agencies on Aging. WA Cares contracts with the AAAs to provide beneficiary services, provider network services, contracting, and outreach support. Ali the AAA Manager and Nicole the Provider Resource Program Manager work closely with the provider network, operations, and training teams to integrate the AAAs into WA Cares in a way that ensures Washingtonians receive the care and support they need. They see the AAAs as trusted partners who bring local expertise that helps WA Cares adapt to the unique needs of communities across the state.

Ali finds deep fulfillment in this work because it aligns so closely with DSHS values. “I’m proud to contribute to program operations and help create policies and procedures that uphold dignity and remove barriers” she said. “Being part of such an unprecedented long-term care program is very exciting.”

Nicole feels the same sense of purpose. “WA Cares allows me to contribute to something truly meaningful, shaping a system that helps Washingtonians prepare for the future and age with dignity. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s thoughtful, collaborative, and committed to making long-term care more accessible and sustainable.”

Both point to the culture of WA Cares as unique compared to other teams they’ve worked on. Ali notes that WA Cares “isn’t just a program, it’s the first of its kind in the nation. The team culture feels different, with a shared sense of mission and urgency knowing we’re creating something that directly impacts the lives of Washingtonians. Instead of working in silos, we rely on cross-agency collaboration.” Nicole agrees, adding that collaboration is more than a value, it’s the foundation. “What sets this team apart is our focus on building systems that advance access, support informed choice, and reflect the lived experiences of our communities. That level of intentionality and heart is rare.”

Because WA Cares is still new, the work comes with challenges. “One of the most challenging parts of my job has been working in a space that is brand new and constantly evolving,” Ali shared. “Policies and systems are being developed in real time, which can make it difficult to give clear answers right away. But the incredible support of my team, leaning on each other’s strengths and quickly sharing information, as made all the difference.”

Even with the challenges, both Ali and Nicole feel valued and supported in their roles. For Ali, it’s the ongoing recognition from colleagues after meetings and stakeholder engagements. For Nicole, who is newer to the team, it’s the sense of belonging. “From day one, colleagues have gone out of their way to share insights, offer support, and invite me into meaningful conversations. It’s clear this isn’t just a workplace, it’s a community built on trust, shared purpose, and a commitment to improving long-term care.”

For both, the work is personal and meaningful. Every day they see how their efforts, and the efforts of their teammates, help shape a program that will make a lasting difference in the lives of Washingtonians for years to come.
