Mental and Emotional Health While Aging

Mental and Emotional Health
Лютий 13, 2025

Cognitive decline is not an inevitable part of aging. Staying active, treating depression, managing chronic conditions and maintaining social connections can help maintain cognitive health.

Aging can bring significant changes that affect mental health, including loss of independence, mobility challenges, medical conditions, changes in living situations and loss of loved ones. The PEARLS program provides counseling services to help adults cope with depression and anxiety, offering strategies to maintain quality of life and encouraging social engagement through activities like book clubs and senior center visits.

Rural communities face unique challenges when it comes to maintaining mental health and social connections. Limited transportation options, geographic isolation, technology barriers and reduced access to services can all increase the risk of social isolation. These factors are linked to higher rates of depression, heart disease and other health concerns.

Dementia cases are expected to double by 2050. Early warning signs can include changes in judgment, social withdrawal, mood changes and memory problems. Support programs are available for both people with dementia and their care partners, offering vital resources and assistance.

The WA Cares Fund can help cover various services and supports when you need care, including in-home care services, home modifications, transportation, meal delivery, adult day services, and care training for family members. WA Cares benefits can be used to pay family caregivers, helping to reduce the financial strain on families while ensuring quality care from trusted loved ones.

Access to WA Cares benefits will give Washingtonians more dignity and choice at a time when they are most vulnerable. Beginning July 2026, anyone who has met contribution requirements and needs care will be able to receive benefits. The full benefit amount starts at $36,500 and grows over time with inflation.
